Suspended Lalmonirhat assistant commissioner, Tapashee Tabassum Urmi has got bail from a defamation case filed over alleged derogatory remarks about martyr Abu Sayed, a figure of the July-August movement on Thursday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Imran Ahmed granted the bail after Urmi voluntarily appeared before the court and sought relief, according to Khademul Islam, the plaintiff’s lawyer.
The case was filed by Abu Hanif, media coordinator of Gono Odhikar Parishad, on October 8 at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain. The court accepted the case after recording Hanif’s statement and summoned Urmi to appear on November 28, as reported by UNB.
The complaint alleges that on October 5, Urmi made defamatory comments not only against Abu Sayed but also about the interim government formed during the student-people’s movement and its Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Her remarks were deemed disrespectful, undermining the legitimacy of the constitutionally formed government. The statements, according to the case, could incite public fear, disrupt governmental stability, and tarnish the reputation of its officials.
