Trade activities has been halted through the Chatlapur Land Customs Station in Moulvibazar district since Thursday morning (November 28) following the ISKCON protest. No vehicles carrying goods have been able to pass through the station.
The disruption began on Wednesday afternoon when members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) blocked the road leading to Chatlapur Customs Station at Koilasahar in India. This protest brought trade activities between Bangladesh and India to a halt.
Sohel Rana Chowdhury, secretary of the Chatlapur Land Customs Station Traders Association, confirmed the situation. He explained that ISKCON members had unexpectedly blocked the road while demonstrating with their organization’s flags. Consequently, trucks carrying goods from Bangladesh have been unable to enter India, and no vehicles carrying goods have arrived from the Indian side.
Chowdhury noted that the abrupt suspension caused goods worth approximately Tk 1.5 crore to be stranded on Wednesday. Perishable items, including fish destined for export to India, are particularly at risk, resulting in significant losses. Efforts are underway to address the issue as Chatlapur Land Customs officials are in communication with their Indian counterparts.
Mominul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of the Sylhet Customs Division, stated that there were no issues on Bangladesh’s side, emphasizing that the problem lies within India and must be resolved there.
